1V: The possibilities of words

I hadn’t contemplated the word inquiry before having a class name using it. The reason is probably because it isn’t a common word used amongst teenagers. However, after looking up the meaning I discovered to my surprise that I actually use the concept of inquiry in my life constantly. Inquiry is like research, it means to analyze things for their meanings and to question or investigate things that are unknown. As students we are endlessly collecting new information into our minds. A new word I learned from the My Beloved World reading is pragmatism which is defined as a method of dealing with things in practical ways, a good skill to acquire as a student. Another new vocabulary word I encountered in class recently is critical. Although I was aware of one of this word’s common meanings known as to be dangerous or serious I learned in my sociology class that critical can also mean judgmental.  This reminded me of the fact that some words can have double meanings and that it is important to always be attentive to detect which version is intended in the text being read.

1I: A solution…close by

Ever find yourself getting distracted by the simplest things in your home or dorm? Can’t seem to focus on your work? Want to try a new place for studying and doing homework? Well I might have just found the right place for you…

If you were thinking library silently in your head, close but not the place I had in mind. The library is in fact one of the quiet places you could go on campus but I was referring to the Alumni Room. Strangely, this place goes unrecognized by most students. It is located on the third floor of the Michael J. Adanti Student Center room 312. It is a room surrounded by walls made of windows and filled with couches, tables, and chairs. It also has a fireplace which gives it a cozy ambiance. It promotes silence and has the food venues right downstairs in case you want to grab a coffee or something to eat. If you ever need to get some work done and you’re nearby feel free to check it out.

1A:The day has finally come

Southern Connecticut State University is the only college I have ever been to and toured inside. It sounds crazy but it’s true. What’s even harder to believe is that I accepted my admissions offer and confirmed my attendance before ever even having step foot on campus. For some reason SCSU had a place in my heart and I knew it was the one. The only reference I had of what college would look like was from television and the internet. Like a child I always fantasized about the day I would go to college and I am proud to say that the day has finally come.
To several people college is an institution where they can become educated and one day become what they’ve always dreamed of, but to me just being here is a dream fulfilled in itself. I had my doubts growing up, but thankfully things worked out in my favor making it possible for me to have my chance at a higher education. Now my plans involve making my adventure here a success. I am aware that it is going to take an enormous amount of time and effort to accomplish my goal of making Dean’s list but that is something I am willing to work towards. At orientation the ambassadors warned us that things would be different than high school but now reality has made its way up to the surface. My biggest concerns are grades, time management, and finances. I also hope that I will be able to become more involved in the community and socially interact with my fellow Owls.
My long term wish is to one day become a registered nurse. Until then I want to make the most out of the opportunities that are presented to me each day. Alongside my classmates I am looking forward to making many long lasting friendships and memories. Through days and nights of class, homework, clubs, and social events I know there will be a light at the end of the tunnel and the class of 2017 will work towards reaching it together.

1B: I HAVE TO DO WHAT?!

My siblings sometimes used to call me a caveman, but I just considered myself somewhat self-reserved. It probably seems strange that I don’t have Facebook, Twitter, or any of the other social networking websites that most people my age use regularly. I had heard of blogs before but I was not sure how they worked or what they consisted of, and when I discovered that I was going to be required to have one I immediately began to panic. I felt as if I were a teenager who still needed to be potty trained. The thought that followed was “how in the world am I going to pull this off?!”.
I’ve never been comfortable with sharing my written thoughts and opinions thus revealing part of the reason why I was not actively involved on the web. The first initiative I took was exploring other peoples blogs. I tried to get an idea of what I was going to have to accomplish on my blog while at the same time deciding how I wanted it to be presented. Tagan’s Kitchen was my favorite of the three blogs I was instructed to look at because it included plenty of pictures and also shared enjoyable recounts of her personal experiences with each food. However, some blogs I came across weren’t as pleasing. Productive Flourishing gave good advice and was easy to relate to but unfortunately there were no pictures and it was set up in a confusing way which required searching for the posts. Something I noticed was how easy it is to become bored or disinterested in a blog. This leads me to Rebecca’s Pocket which to me wasn’t at all intriguing and was hard to understand due to the fact that posts weren’t labeled, topics were random, and there was no elaboration on her opinions.
After becoming familiar with the different options for blogs I decided I want mine to be simple. I hope that readers can connect with and understand the matters that might make their way onto my blog and also manage to stay interested while doing so. In the future I aspire to progress as a blogger by continuing to learn from others and also from my own mistakes.
