1V: The possibilities of words
I hadn’t contemplated the word inquiry before having a class name using it. The reason is probably because it isn’t a common word used amongst teenagers. However, after looking up the meaning I discovered to my surprise that I actually use the concept of inquiry in my life constantly. Inquiry is like research, it means to analyze things for their meanings and to question or investigate things that are unknown. As students we are endlessly collecting new information into our minds. A new word I learned from the My Beloved World reading is pragmatism which is defined as a method of dealing with things in practical ways, a good skill to acquire as a student. Another new vocabulary word I encountered in class recently is critical. Although I was aware of one of this word’s common meanings known as to be dangerous or serious I learned in my sociology class that critical can also mean judgmental. This reminded me of the fact that some words can have double meanings and that it is important to always be attentive to detect which version is intended in the text being read.
