11I.1: Office Hours
|
Plate Streaking Method |
This week I had a lab exam scheduled on Wednesday and my professor
offered extra review at her office hours on Monday from 1-2pm for anyone who
had any questions. Her name is Lynn Vandeusen, her office is located on the
second floor of the Jennings building in room 233 and email is vandeusenl1@southernct.edu. One of the
questions I asked her was “what is the main purpose of streaking?” and she
informed me that the main purpose is to be able to take an unknown specimen
sample and make a streak plate in order to get the growth of individual
colonies which can then be used to be Gram stained in order to find out
specific characteristics that will help identify the organism and what threats
it could pose. Another question I asked was “why are antibacterial (antibiotic)
hand soaps and products bad?” and she told me they’re bad because they mess up
our Normal Flora (good bacteria) and leave behind the worst and strongest
bacteria which then become resistant to the different antibiotics we have been
exposed to so then when they infect us its more threatening and harder to
treat.
